South Asia, which comprises five communities in India and one in Bangladesh, is the youngest zone of the Federation. Yet, the first community in Bangalore, in India’s South, was also one of the first communities of the Federation.
 
India

In India L’Arche is called Fellowship with Mentally Retarded (FMR). L'Arche in India started in 1970 when the community in Bangalore was founded. L’Arche Kolkata followed three years later. L’Arche Chennai saw the light in 1975, L’Arche Nandi Bazaar in 1977 and L’Arche Asansol in 2007. The Indian communities are also called Asha Niketans (homes of hope).

India was an important milestone for the Federation, as it opened it up to other religions and a completely different cultural and socio-economic context.

Jean Vanier was deeply touched by the country and inspired by its leader, Mahatma Gandhi.
 
Bangladesh

L’Arche Bangladesh has one community in Mymensingh. It was started in 2002. It has three homes and programmes like a day care centre and a work shop.
