Latin America & the Caribbean

The communities in Latin America & the Caribbean are characterised by strong relationships, but also by a great fragility as most communities are established in poor neighbourhoods.

The oldest community in Latin America is L’Arche Carrefour in Port-au-Prince, Haiti which was founded in 1976.  Two homes, a workshop and school welcome 15 internal and 15 external people with an intellectual disability.  The second community in Haiti, founded three years later, is situated in a rural context near the small town of Les Cayes in the South of Haiti.

Honduras was the second country on the continent in which L’Arche became present.  The first L’Arche community was founded in a poor neighbourhood of the capital Tegucigalpa.  Today, Honduras counts a second community in Choluteca, 200 km south of the country’s capital, close to the Pacific ocean.

The Dominican Republic is well-known as a holiday paradise for North Americans and Europeans.  L’Arche is present in the Western part of Santo Domingo.  Founded in 1984, the community develops its activities in two homes, a day program and a workshop.

In 1985, L’Arche moved some 2000 km further west to Mexico City.  The small community still struggles to survive in the huge metropolis, but was joined in 1999 by L’Arche Querétaro, about 200 km north of the capital.

Brazil is by far the largest country of Latin America, but it was only in 1987 that a L’Arche community was founded in Sao Paolo.  10 persons with an intellectual disability live in two homes.  27 external members of the community participate in its day programme.

The neighbouring country Argentina saw its first L’Arche community in 2003. The youngest community of the region is situated in the country’s capital.  At the moment, it welcomes two internal and two external persons in its home and its little workshop.
