Canada

L'Arche in Canada encompasses 28 communities with 200 homes and day programs distributed over a vast region that extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. One of its main characteristics is its regional diversity, both culturally and linguistically. This diversity is reflected in the four regions that comprise L'Arche Canada: The Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario, and Western Canada.

Approximately one-third of the communities are French-speaking and the others English-speaking. This unique combination of cultures and languages together gives L'Arche Canada its particular character. Our communities seek to testify to the importance of friendships and community life for the full development of the person with an intellectual disability. In each of our communities people are nourished by a rich community life shared with those of differing ability and assistants from around the world. In Canada, L'Arche collaborates with several national organizations to help make known the special contribution that people with disabilities can make to our society and to sensitize the public to the isolation suffered by those who are marginalized. Several communities, both in rural and urban areas, collaborate actively with other groups concerned with social justice.
